Service Learning + Civic Engagement in the News

Kenzie Besgrove, a University of Kansas junior in speech-language-hearing, was named a member of the 2026-2027 Newman Civic Fellow cohort. Newman programming emphasizes personal, professional and civic growth that empowers fellows to collaborate effectively and create large-scale positive change.

The University of Kansas Center for Service Learning has received external funding to support the continuation of the CSL’s Trailblazers Mini-Grant and Cohort Program. The 2025-2026 cohort included more than 25 student Trailblazers across 16 projects focused on sustainability, youth development, health and more.

Twelve Jayhawks volunteered with KU Alternative Breaks this March, serving three community organizations across Colorado and Illinois. KU Alternative Breaks provides immersive volunteer experiences that foster a lifelong commitment to service.

The University of Kansas will celebrate Civic Learning Week @ KU March 9-13 with a slate of events for KU students and others in the Jayhawk community who are interested in learning more about community engagement and civic leadership opportunities at the university and beyond.

The Kansas University Center on Disabilities (KUCD) is among five national recipients of the 2026 Excellence in Community-Engaged Partnerships Award. The distinction from Campus Compact honors higher education programs and initiatives that make a meaningful impact by partnering with communities to address complex social issues.
