Educate & Act Series will feature sessions on grant funding, consumerism


LAWRENCE — The Educate & Act series, led by the Center for Service Learning and The Commons at the University of Kansas, will host three events in spring 2026 for students, faculty and staff, and the community. This series offers opportunities to learn about connections between research and civic engagement and connects attendees with resources for community involvement.

The first session, which will take place at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 17, will explore the nuances of grant funding in the nonprofit world. This event features:

  • Abbey Doyle, KU alumna and grants and operations coordinator, George Kaiser Family Foundation 
  • Lori Sellers Trenholm, director of community investment, Douglas County Community Foundation
  • Brett Martin, vice president of community impact, United Way of Kaw Valley
  • Silke von Esenwein, associate researcher senior, KU Center for Public Partnerships & Research.

A second session, led by the Center for Service Learning, will take place at 5:30 p.m. March 10 and will be held in conjunction with National Civic Learning Week. It will feature a discussion about “Student Senate Elections & Engaging Your Representatives.”

A third session, hosted in conjunction with Worldwide Climate and Justice Education Month, will highlight “Consumerism, Fast Fashion & Disposable Economies.” This event will take place at 5:30 p.m. March 24.
