Educate & Act series will address journalistic accountability, voting rights, role of higher education in democracy
LAWRENCE — The Educate & Act series at the University of Kansas, led by The Commons and the Center for Service Learning, will host three virtual events this semester for KU students, faculty, staff and the larger community. This series highlights the relationships among research, engagement and U.S. democracy through engaging research and civic participation.
The first session, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 9 and led by The Commons, will explore the complex and changing dynamics that characterize an evolving field of journalism by focusing on “Media and Accountability.” Speakers include Alyssa Appelman, associate professor of journalism; Emily Harter, editor-in-chief for The University Daily Kansan; Anna Kaminski, reporter for the Kansas Reflector; and Laura Lorson, host, producer and editor for Kansas Public Radio.
Speakers will address the following topics: what does it mean when the owners of national media outlets display clear political alignments; how does increasing reliance on generative artificial intelligence influence the news and its credibility; how can journalism be used to uphold integrity within an institution; and how does revenue-based journalism navigate ad sales and underwriting. Attendees may also submit additional topics for discussion.
The second event, led by the Center for Service Learning, will take place at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 7. This session will focus on voting rights and voter suppression, presented in conjunction with National Voter Education Week.
A final session will take place at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 12 and focus on the role that higher education plays in working democracy.
