KU Earns ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge Goal Seal

KU‘s 2020 student voter rate of 71% earned the institution a Gold Seal from ALL IN in November 2021, which utilizes NSLVE results to award various seals for excellence in student voter participation. KU’s current and past NSLVE reports can be found on the university’s ALL IN Challenge webpage. The ALL IN Challenge Award Ceremonies recognized hundreds of campuses earning Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze seals. For a full list of seal recipients, visit ALL IN’s Seal Awardees page.

Many campus and community partners contributed to promoting voter engagement and civic action at KU leading up to the 2020 election, some of whom were nominated for additional ALL IN awards. Those contributing to the voting efforts include:

The Commons, in partnership with the KU Center for Service Learning and the Emily Taylor Center for Women and Gender Equity, hosted a variety of events featuring opportunities to learn about democracy in the United States and equip attendees with information around civic participation. The Commons also organized virtual Civic Engagement Office Hours, which allowed for members of the KU community to have their voting questions answered by Douglas County Clerk, Jamie Shew.

The Douglas County Clerk’s Office supported the addition of a polling place at the Lied Centerfor early and Election Day voting, as well as ballot drop-off locations on campus.*County Clerk Jamie Shew was nominated for an ALL IN National Award for these efforts.

Kansas Athletics, through the KU LEADS unit, supported student-athlete civic action through the Jayhawk Athlete Movement and organized a voter registration drive specifically for student-athletes.  *Former KU Athletics staff member George Midgett was nominated for an ALL IN National Award for these efforts.

The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics supported a month of voter registration and Get Out The Vote programming through their Student Advisory Board and the Civic Engagement and Leadership Council. *Dole Institute Senior Associate Director Barbara Ballard was nominated for an ALL IN National Award for these efforts.

The Student Involvement and Leadership Center activated the TurboVote extension on Rock Chalk Central, so users received information about voter registration upon login.

Student Senate supported voter registration and Get Out The Vote activities in collaboration with their Student Legislative Action Committee. *Former Student Senate Government Relations Director Logan Stenseng was nominated for an ALL IN National Award for these efforts.

Members of the University of Kansas community are invited to join the Center for Service Learning and others in promoting civic engagement at KU in preparation for the 2022 midterm election cycle by becoming a Civic Engagement Ambassador. The program connects faculty, staff, students and community partners who are interested in promoting service learning and civic and community engagement. Those interested can sign up online.
